About the lecture:
Approaches to Ukraine’s wartime and anticipated post-war reconstruction and recovery, united under a general slogan of build back better, are currently embodied in multiple policies and projects. However, these often lack embeddedness into a broader context of territory, failing to trace and reflect upon historically and ecologically defined settlement practices and, broadly, a connection to the zemlya, the land. How could the ‘territorial’ focus be translated into recovery policy, in terms of concepts, approaches, and methods?

About the lecturer:
Yegor Vlasenko is a PhD student in Architecture and City Sciences and Doctoral Assistant at the Laboratory of Urbanism, EPFL. Previously, he worked at GIZ Ukraine, CANactions School, and Kyiv School of Economics. He holds a MSc degree in Urban Studies from Malmö University (2017); he was also a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at MIT Department of Urban Studies+Planning (2019-20).
His research has been focused on studying territorial governance and spatial planning systems in Europe, urban commons, housing in post-socialist states, and urban fallism.
