Berlin-Ukraine Urban Expert Exchange – Cultural Heritage Protection in Ukraine

You are currently viewing Berlin-Ukraine Urban Expert Exchange – Cultural Heritage Protection in Ukraine

The „Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing“ invites to this year‘s series of Urban Expert Exchange Meetings on Wednesday, 22 January 2025 with the topic of cultural heritage protection in Ukraine. From the start of its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has systematically targeted its cultural heritage. These attacks are designed to undermine the very foundations of Ukrainian identity. Therefore, protecting cultural heritage and saving protected buildings and cultural objects that have been destroyed has to be one of the priorities in rebuilding the country.

They have invited two experts for cultural heritage protection to address this topic: The Dresden-based architect and urban planner Iris Gleichmann will share her insights from a rehabilitation project in Lviv. Kateryna Goncharova, Country Director for Ukraine at the World Monuments Fund, will introduce the recommendations from an European Commission-led expert group on safeguarding cultural heritage in Ukraine.

Agenda:
17:00 – Welcome
17:15 – Iris Gleichmann: Municipal development and rehabilitation of the historic centre of Lviv
